Frontal sweeps - analysis

Having analysed Rear sweeps( http://razorwire.wz.cz/rear_throws.htm ) , I might as well analyse Frontal sweeps. These are also used in all wrestling arts, including capoeira/batuque, judo, wrestling etc. Their distinguishing feature is that the front of your leg is against the back or the side of opponent's leg(s); and you throw him to the ground over it, back first.

We only analyse standing Frontal sweeps; ie without your hands touching ground. (Ie we do not analyse low rasteiras).

As ever, if you have any question to any of the throws, you can write me an email.

1) Banda de lado(Vingativa) - (Tiger+LightLegs)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qWkDjn10nPg

-step behind the opponent with your right leg and push him backward with your right elbow while lifting him upward on your right leg with LightLegs
-one of the core throws of capoeiragem; used in Carioca, Bahian capoeiragem, Batuque etc.
-it uses different entries in different styles

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WMN-KUZLwsU
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QgMM88LZKOU

-it can also create different finishes by tinkering with the mechanics; from killing the opponent to just breaking his collarbone
-the most important components is LightLegs; any throw without LightLegs is not Banda de lado/Vingativa.

2) Recife Banda de lado (Tiger+Rubber feet)

- Recife-specific version of Banda de lado; where you pinch his leg to your leg with your hand and jump so he falls sideways on his head.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3rUuf9UQOZ4

3) Frontal Lifting banda (Eagle+Seduction1)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SKzOm6lr3p8

-the highest-lifting frontal throw.
-used in Batuque, where it can be done with RubberLegs for even more spectacular lift

-in Shuai jiao, it is called Thigh lifting throw

https://youtu.be/zj6rYsrepDw?t=943

https://youtu.be/UZc7t4wLKss?t=56

b)in can be done without using your leg, using your free arm on his chest instead for lifting; then it has Eagle+Seduction1+Nemer mechanics
-this is judo Ushiro-goshi

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ORIYstuxYT8

c)or you can use your free arm for lifting his leg at knee (instead of your leg); then it has Eagle+Seduction1+Child mechanics

-this is Shuai-jiao Vertical lifting throw

https://youtu.be/UZc7t4wLKss?t=51

4) Frontal Raspa (Rooster)

-the simplest Frontal sweep; sweep opponent's left leg up with your right leg
-done in Batuque; can be done with RubberLegs

https://youtu.be/rfAt2_T_DXI

-in modern capoeira, they wrongly call it 'banda de frente' or even 'rasteira'; it is neither of them; it is Raspa
-this never was a rasteira!
-or they even call it 'vingativa' when done from the side with hand action; again, this is preposterous

-in kungfu/Shuai jiao, it is done by unbalancing the opponent with your hands first; various hand actions can be used
-unbalance to the rear

https://youtu.be/1j9GyuKUD2o?t=1773

5) Ko-soto-gari/Outside reaping (Sloth)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jeQ541ScLB4

-unbalance the opponent and reap his right leg with your left leg using Sloth
-unbalance to the rear

6) "Ko-soto-otoshi"/Outside stepping-down (Sloth+Child)

Stepping version of Ko-soto-gari.
Judo does not teach this throw; but it is the analogy of O-soto-gari having a stepping version - O-soto-otoshi. Also, the archetype allows this.

-unbalance the opponent and step behind his right leg with your left leg using Sloth+Child
-unbalance to the rear

7) "Ko-soto-guruma"/Outside rolling (Sheep)

Rolling version of Ko-soto-gari.
Judo does not teach this throw; but it is the analogy of O-soto-guruma done frontally (or O-soto-gari having a rolling version). The archetype allows this.

-unbalance the opponent and lift his left leg on your right leg frontally; then roll him off your leg to your right around his spine
-unbalance to the rear

This throw can be done with AngeLegs; giving it so much power you jump into the air together with the opponent, lifting; then you spin him around your leg; like a tornado.

8) Ko-soto-gake/Outside hooking (Sparrowhawk)

Wrap opponent's right leg with your left leg and fall with him to take him down
-unbalance to the rear

Note that this video is wrong:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8b6kY4s4zH4

The guy first uses Sparrowhawk to hook opponent's leg (Ko-soto-gake), properly; but then switches to Sloth and finished with Ko-soto-gari!
Ie, he is demoing completely wrong technique; this is the reason you need animal archetypes to understand what you are doing!

This guy does it a bit better:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jl99iUTlIVY

But still, he stops the Sparrowhawk too early. Proper Ko-soto-gari has you fall with the opponent - using Sparrowhawk archetype for the whole throw.

9) Rapa/Neural outer bothlegs sweep (Rooster+Seduction)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UvLN0JlX8BI

-takes both legs at once from the side by the means of nerve disruption
-no hands
-can be done with RubberLegs
-used in Batuque and Carioca
-the opponent spins around his spine like 'rapa' (small spinning top)

10) Rasteira (Snake->Crane)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_vrTtWCPQgs

-the real Carioca rasteira; done standing
-unbalance the opponent with Snake, then lift/throw with Crane
-has RubberLegs version

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ZNHobnQHbQ

11) Banda de frente (Tiger->Dom Tiger)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NXEQmjhHbC0

-one of the most used bandas in Carioca, Batuque and capoeira in general
-lock your knee with opponent's knee, lift him and sweep both his legs sideways
-has RubberLegs version

-this throw has the opponent land on his side, so it does not fit completely here; but in the end, I decided to include it

12) Sasae-tsurikomi-ashi/Outside uprooting - ankle (Crane)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=699i--pvYmE

-uproot opponent's right leg on the outside with your left foot at his calf; and rotate him over the block with your hands
-pull diagonally to his front/side

In wrestling, they do it from 2-on-1:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B7C2s_rYeoA

But note that as this is the same action as the second part of Rasteira(Crane lift); so it can also be done using RubberLegs!
Doing RubberLegs Sasae-tsurikomi-ashi results in a spectacular throw.

b) You can underhook his right straight arm with your right arm; locking it upward; pulling him up onto his toes and uprooting opponent's left leg with your right foot at his shin.

This is Crane+Child; and Shuai jiao 'elbow locking' throw:

https://youtu.be/1j9GyuKUD2o?t=1322

13) Hiza-guruma/Outside uprooting - knee (Crane+Nemer)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JPJx9-oAVns

-uproot opponent's right leg on the outside with your left foot at his knee; and rotate him over the block with your hands
-higher version of the same throw
-pull diagonally to his front/side

b)Put opponent's head into front chancery under your right arm; and uproot opponent's left thing on the outside with your right thigh; rotating him over the block with your hands - Crane+Seduction1

https://youtu.be/1j9GyuKUD2o?t=1971

14) Okuri-ashi-harai/Sweep both legs (Leopard)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nw1ZdRjrdRI
-unbalance the opponent with your hands and take both his legs with your leg from the outside
-unbalance to the side
-judo's version of Rapa; instead of nerve disruption, you unbalance with your hands

15) De-ashi-harai/Sweep outside leg (Leopard+Child)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4BUUvqxi_Kk
-smaller version of previous throw
-unbalance the opponent with your hands and take his right leg your left leg from the outside
-unbalance to the front

-some people do it in capoeira, without hands, calling it "Disequilibriante"
-waiting for the opponent to step forth, then sweeping his leg before he puts his weight on it
-this is brittle; and does not work against real ginga

16) Calcadeira/Frontal shoehorn(Snake)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1UaDrIV4Ml8

-scrape the back of opponent's right heel with your right foot to create nerve disruption; then throw him with your hands
-unlike in Ko-soto-gari, where you first use your hands to unbalance the opponent and then throw him with leg action; here, you first use your leg to apply nerve disruption and then throw him with your hands; it is the opposite type of throw
-compare with the 'Rear shoehorn' I show in the article on rear sweeps.

17) Pulling and hooking (Snake)
-unbalance the opponent to his front by pulling with your hands; then hook his left leg(heel) from the outside with your right leg and pull
-like the first part of Rasteira; but using your hands too
-from Kuai-jiao

-Shuai-jiao version:

https://youtu.be/1j9GyuKUD2o?t=2850

18) Shaving (Tiger+Seduction1)
-from side chancery under his left arm, use your head, both arms and right leg to 'shave' both his legs from under him
-from Shuai-jiao

https://youtu.be/UZc7t4wLKss?t=102

Quasi-vingativas:

These are Frontal sweeps that are sold today as Vingativa; but are not.

19) Tiger/Down-pushing quasivingativa(Tiger)

-just step behind the opponent with your right leg and try to push him down over your leg your right elbow/arm

https://youtu.be/jDmDnR2A018?t=299

-ineffective, as it lacks LightLegs(see (1)); do not use it
-in Kuai jiao, they enter with a right punch to opponent's jaw; which makes it a bit more effective; still, this is not a good throw

20) Eagle/Up-lifting quasivingativa(Eagle)

-step behind the opponent with your right leg and lift the opponent over your leg with your right shoulder

https://youtu.be/SGQE3YNBkzY?t=97

-easy to escape from and to pull you down; do not use it
-in Kuai-jiao, they underhook opponent's right arm with their right arm; this is a lot more effective
-or even his other arm, as in Shuai jiao:

https://youtu.be/zj6rYsrepDw?t=867

b)You can hook his far leg to make this a good takedown (Eagle+Nemer):

https://youtu.be/iry_BkG2SZw?t=1269

21) Mantis/Head-pushing quasivingativa (Mantis)

-step behind the opponent with your right leg and arch rightward, toppling him over your leg with the back of your head
-used in Abada
-effective as a takedown
-but in fighting, the opponent will have a field day grabbing your face and hair as he goes down
-do not use this

This is Shuai jiao version:

https://youtu.be/iry_BkG2SZw?t=1883

b) If you hug the opponent and fall with him, this becomes Mantis+Nemer.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eV1qJocZKAY

Paradoxically, this throw is good; because unlike Mantis alone, it puts Nerve binding on the opponent, so he cannot gouge your face as he falls down.

--

22) Body control: Sink Quasivingativa(Tiger+Dom Horse legs)

-grab the opponent and step behind the him with your right leg as in vingativa; but shallowly; and use Body control: Sink to take him straight down (not over your leg)

23) Lion quasivingativa (Lion+Lion legs)

-from Lion cub form
-similar a bit to Eagle quasivingativa; but breaks his arm, back and the fall damages his intestines

24) Lion shaving (Lion+Lion legs)

-from Lion cub form
-from side chancery under his left arm, use your head, right arm and right leg to throw him similarly to Shaving throw
-this dislocates his left hip and the fall damages his gallbladder

25) Lion arm-locking (Lion+Lion legs)

-from Lion cub form
-similar to Elbow locking throw(see above); lock opponent's right elbow from the inside with your right arm
-then sweep with your right leg into his left thigh
-this breaks his elbow, dislocates both hips and damages his bladder as he falls

26) Low frontal sweep (Tiger+Mantis legs, Dog+Mantis legs, Mantis+Mantis legs, Eagle+Mantis legs)

I know I promised 'no hands on the floor'; but I want to share this one with you

Like Low rear sweep, this technique is mostly known from games and kung-fu movies:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cg3WwHU9uBc

But curiously, it works (against a standing opponent) if you do it properly; ie it is a real combat technique done properly!

However, I have never seen anybody doing it properly.

For the low sweep to work as takedown, it must be done using Mantis legs!

If you do the throw properly, using Tiger+Mantis legs, it will take standing opponent down very hard, without unbalancing him with your hands, just by sweeping one(sic) of his legs!

In kungfu, this sweep can be extended with different hand techniques; so it breaks opponent's neck, back or seals his breathing as he gets taken down.

27) Proto-capoeira rasteira(s) (Snake+Chaosbeetle feet)

These are the first rasteiras capoeiragem(proto-capoeira) had; they are done standing, countering opponent's punch.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2FkD49ZBW80

There are three versions corresponding to the three guardas of Proto-capoeira Eagle ginga.

Proto-rasteiras look simple, but are very sophisticated internally.

And finally, they are designed to injure the opponent who is thrown.

28) Recife Squat raspa (Rooster+LightLegs+RubberFeet)

Recife version of rasteira, which is kind of squat Raspa.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gwm_HvM963M

Internal frontal sweeps:

1) Internal Rasteira (Snake->Crane)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_vrTtWCPQgs

-the same as Rasteira, just done from the inside

2) Internal pulling and hooking (Snake)

-unbalance opponent by pulling with your hands to the front; then pull his right leg from the inside with your right leg as in the first part of Rasteira
-used in Shuai jiao

https://youtu.be/WTrR9psATgQ?t=311

3) Ko-uchi-gari/Inside reaping (Sloth+Seduction1)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Jb3tZvr9Ng
-unbalance the opponent and reap his right leg from the inside with your right leg, using Sloth+Seduction1
-unbalance to the rear
-internal version of Ko-soto-gari

4) "Ko-uchi-otoshi"/Inside stepping-down(Sloth+Child+Seduction1)

Stepping version of Ko-uchi-gari.
Judo does not teach this throw; but it is the analogy of O-soto-gari having stepping version - O-soto-otoshi. Also, the archetype allows this.

-unbalance the opponent and step behind his right leg from the inside with your right leg, using Sloth+Child+Seduction1
-step and twist your hips, vingativa-like
-unbalance to the rear

5) "Ko-uchi-guruma"/Inside rolling (Sheep+Seduction1)

Rolling version of Ko-uchi-gari.
Judo does not teach this throw; but it is the analogy of Ko-soto-guruma done internally. The archetype allows this.

-unbalance the opponent and lift his right leg on your right leg from the inside frontally; then roll him to your right around his spine
-unbalance to the rear

6) Ko-uchi-gake/Inside hooking (Sparrowhawk+Seduction1)

-hook opponent's his right leg from the inside with your right leg and fall with him to take him down
-unbalance to the rear
-internal version of Ko-soto-gake
-again, judo guys do the throw wrong:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=byOC3Kb0WRE

He begins with Sparrowhawk+Seduction1(hooking); but then finishes with Sloth+Seduction1; ie this is Ko-uchi-gari, not Ko-uchi-gake

This is the proper way to do Ko-uchi-gake(Sparrowhaw+Seduction1):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sTJgF01xw8k

However, for some reason, they call it 'ko uchi makikomi' - while it is clearly Ko-uchi-gake.
Again, the archetypes tell the story.

7) Harai-tsurikomi-ashi/Inside uprooting (Crane+Nemer+Seduction1)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gGPXvWL8VbE

-internal counterpart of Hiza-guruma
-uproot opponent's left leg on the inside with your left foot at his knee; and rotate him over the block with your hands
-the low(ankle)blocking has no internal counterpart
-pull diagonally to his front/side

8) Inside de-ashi-harai/Sweep side leg (Leopard+Child+Seduction1)

-inside version of de-ashi-harai
-not taught by Judo, as far as I know; but logical inside counterpart; and the archetype supports it
-unbalance the opponent with your hands and take his left leg with your left leg from the inside
-unbalance to the front

9)Inside leg-wine (Sheep)

-put your right leg from the inside behind opponent's left leg; and enwine it CW so you can uproot him upward and throw him; used in Shuai jiao.

https://youtu.be/zj6rYsrepDw?t=1077

b) After entwining your right leg around his left leg front inside, you can use Sheep+Child to perform a flip in mid-air over your right shoulder.

This looks more like a headlong throw (see my next article); but it is a type of leg-wine, so we put it here

https://youtu.be/7RqXoCYuUAo?t=556

10) Internal frontal Raspa(Rooster)

Like frontal Raspa, but from the inside.

https://youtu.be/1j9GyuKUD2o?t=1933

The 'missing' Judo throws

If you are a throwing enthusiant, you might want to try out the 'missing' judo throws - throws that could logically be done in judo; and the archetypes also (logically) support them; but judo does not teach them, namely:

Rear sweeps(see the previous article):
-O-uchi-otoshi
-O-uchi-guruma
-Rear calcadeira
-Inside blocking (Peacock+Child; inside version of modern O-soto-gari(Peacock))

Frontal sweeps:
-Ko-soto-otoshi
-Ko-soto-guruma
-Ko-uchi-otoshi
-Ko-uchi-guruma
-Internal de-ashi-harai
-RubberLegs Sasae-tsurikomi-ashi

Some might say these are 'made up' throws; but they are real throws, because the human archetype system supports them (the human nerve systems 'knows about them' since we are born).

'Forbidden combinations'

However, not only these 'missing throws' are interesting by themselves; they also allow otherwise impossible combinations!

Say I unbalance the opponent to his rear and attack his right leg with right Ko-uchi-gari.

The opponent stiffens or lifts his right leg to evade my sweep. Normally, I cannot switch into O-uchi-gari/O-uchi-gake with the same right leg; as human nerve system does not allow this.

However! I can flow directly into right O-uchi-guruma against his left leg - that works!

So you can go from Ko-uchi-gari directly into O-uchi-guruma with the same leg. I believe most people will not expect this combination.

But this only works with O-uchi-guruma; so if you do not know this throw, you cannot use this combination.

There are several of these 'forbidden combinations'; that only work if you use the 'missing throws' (done with the same leg unless noted otherwise):

1) right Ko-uchi-gari -> right O-uchi-guruma
2) right O-soto-otoshi -> right Rear calcadeira
3) right O-uchi-gari -> right Ko-uchi-otoshi
4) right Ko-soto-gari -> right Ko-soto-otoshi
5) left O-uchi-otoshi -> right Ko-soto-guruma (can use AngelLegs)
6) right Sasae-tsurikomi-ashi -> right Ko-uchi-guruma
7) right Uchi-mata -> right O-uchi-otoshi
8) right Hiza-guruma  -> right Inside blocking (Peacock+Child)
9) right Harai-tsurikomi-ashi -> right Inside de-ashi-harai

It would be great if people made these combinations work in randori; as they look great (I tried them ;-)

If you manage to use them to improve your judo, I would be thankful if you let me know.

And please do not forget where you learned them; and spread the word so more people can learn.

------------------

Excursus:

Logically, Rear sweep can be done from inside or outside - o-soto or o-uchi.
And Frontal sweep can be done from inside or outside - ko-soto or ko-uchi.

While the leg actions might be reaping(gari), stepping-down(otoshi), rolling(guruma) and hooking(gake).  (And blocking, but we leave that for the note below).

Together, this gives us 16 types of these sweeping throws.

Out of them, judo teaches these 10:
1)traditional O-soto-gari (Snake)
2)O-soto-otoshi
3)O-soto-guruma
4)O-soto-gake
5)O-uchi-gari
6)O-uchi-gake
7)Ko-soto-gari
8)Ko-soto-gake
9)Ko-uchi-gari
10)Ko-uchi-gake

The remaining six are described above.

There are three throws that are outside of this system:
-modern O-soto-gari/outside blocking (Peacock) - this one does not fit, as it does not have the frontal versions(Ko-soto,Ko-uchi); but it has inside version, not taught by judo:
-Inside blocking - inside version of the above
-O-soto-makikomi - this one does not have the remaining three versions (Ko-soto, Ko-uchi, O-uchi)
