Bimba's Pillory in ground grappling

We do not do much BJJ-style ground-grappling; but I still have some basics, so I noticed Mestre Bimba's 'Tronco de pescoço' (Pillory) suffocation could be used as a finish on the ground.

The grip itself is quite simple - using Dom Rooster mechanics, you hug opponent's head with your right arm; and press your left hand into his face, squeezing his nose between your middle and ring finger and covering his mouth with your palm; so he cannot breathe at all.

                   the Pillory grip (Dom Rooster)

Well, first off - it is not really Bimba's; the suffocation probably comes from a certain older style of capoeira Bimba learned and used as a base for his Regional.

             standing Pillory suffocation

In this certain style, Tronco de pescoço/Pillory was used as a suffocation in stand-up grappling; after setting the opponent up with Asfixiante (which also comes from this certain style; and I believe its Regional name Asfixiante('suffocation') might refer to the Pillory suffocation it set up. Just so you know that Bimba did not adapt Asfixiante from boxing or similar BS).

While we are talking about it, this is the proper Asfixiante:

Regardless of its origin, Bimba used the Pillory suffocation as a counter to Encruzilhada in his Nemer system:

And I believe it can be used in ground grappling (which Bimba did not teach) too, like this:

1)Mount - Pillory choke

From mount position, simply apply Pillory by getting low, equiping Dom Rooster archetype, hugging behind opponent's head with left arm and using your right hand to pinch his nose and cover his mouth.

Opponent will have very hard time getting you off him; as Pillory installs Nerve binding on his arms and body.

Note this is not just about physically smothering his mouth and nose; Pillory done properly using Dom Rooster mechanics also locks opponent's arms, making it hard for him to fight back and push you away.

So sooner or later, he will either give up or pass out.

-

The only problem is that Pillory is an air choke; so it will take longer to make him pass out.

In the original standing application, you first strike opponent's chest with Asfixiante to push the air out of him, then apply Pillory; to make it work quicker.

But perhaps that could be replicated even on the ground; first, press your body close to the opponent in the mount; then equip Dom Rooster and inhale; squeezing opponent's chest by expanding your own chest from the mount, squeezing the air out of him. Then immediately apply Pillory without allowing him to breathe in; this results in a very quick suffocation.

2)Scarfhold - Pillory choke

Scarfhold is tailor-made for Pillory; as you already have your left arm hugging opponent's neck.

So again, just pinch his nose and cover his mouth with your right hand using proper archetype(Dom Rooster); he will have very hard time getting out, as there is again Nerve binding.

(Note that you have to lift your right elbow very high for it to work,ie to have the proper archetype;as you press, lift it to the side of your head. On the picture, the right elbow is lowered so the position is visible).

You also can (and should) use the Dom Rooster chest-with-chest squeezing trick(described from the mount position) to push the air out of him before the suffocation, making it quite quick.

3)Guard - Pillory sweep

You can apply Pillory even from the guard; if you manage to hug opponent's head with your right arm, for example by pulling him into you with your legs, you can use your left hand to pinch his nose and cover his mouth; while using your left leg on the same side to press against his right hip.

Even this version allows the proper archetype(Dom Rooster); so he will have a hard time getting out, with his arms locked by Nerve binding.

However, here, you cannot squeeze the air out of him by pressing his chest with your chest; as you are too far from him.

So you can either wait longer until he suffocates; or, you can take advantage of the hold and turn him over:

Using worm-like (or more precisely, slime-like) wiggling of your body, turn the opponent over to your right (towards your hugging arm) into mount (where you can re-apply the Pillory as described above).

This makes this application a 'Pillory sweep'!

For it to work, you must not only turn over; instead, you must use the slime-like(Dom Rooster mechanics) wiggling while turning to break the opponent's posture.

Ixprimenti!

However, as usually - do not believe me, try it!

If you do the grip using proper mechanics (Dom Rooster), you should find out the opponent is quite defenceless once you apply it.

Also, the feeling is quite ugly, so he will be probably quick to tap.

Biting

Oh, and if you are concerned about the opponent bitting your smothering hand - try it too.

You should find out that in properly done Pillory, opponent can open his mouth, but cannot bite. The Dom Rooster archetype is very powerful.

Conclusion

Tronco de pescoço/Pillory, a technique that plays minor role in Mestre Bimba's Nemer system (Encruzilhada counter); and probably was used as a stand-up suffocation in certain older capoeiragem system; can be used in ground-grappling to some nice and quick effect.

If you manage to apply it successfully in groundfighting, I would be thankful if you let me know.
